Read the word list

Career words belong in most elementary classrooms because community helpers is a standard unit in kindergarten through grade three. This list covers those jobs, from teacher, nurse and firefighter to baker and plumber, and then stretches into the longer professional titles that older students will meet: veterinarian, accountant, electrician, pharmacist and photographer.

All the titles are gender-neutral, so the lesson stays inclusive and the spelling is simpler. The difficulty runs from four-letter answers such as chef to long words with awkward letter groups, like librarian and paramedic. Phrases such as mail carrier, flight attendant and park ranger cover jobs where the title has two words, which suits whiteboard play where the spaces are visible.

68 entries. Our solver needed 2.0 wrong guesses on average: 34 easy, 26 medium and 8 hard. The toughest is chef (8 misses), the quickest teacher (0).

Using this list in class

Use this list during a careers week or a community helpers unit in the early grades. After each round, ask the class what the person does, what tools they use and who they help. For a longer activity, invite a family member to visit and have students guess their job from the blanks before they are introduced.

In upper elementary, the longer words work well with a project on career research: each student picks one job from the list, writes a short paragraph and presents it. Counselors can use the list as a conversation starter about what students want to be when they grow up.
