Read the word list
Valentine's Day in a classroom is as much about cards, kindness and friendship as it is about romance, and this list reflects that. The words come from the card exchange (envelope, mailbox, classmate), from flowers and treats, and from the vocabulary of caring, such as cherish, devotion and thoughtful.
Difficulty is spread on purpose. Heart, love and kiss are quick for the youngest players. At the other end, bouquet, sweetheart and valentine give older students real work, because they carry odd spellings: the silent t and the qu in bouquet, the double e in sweetheart. Words like truffle and glitter have double consonants that players guess late. Phrases such as be mine and love letter help for whole-class games, because the shape of each answer is easy to read at a distance.
67 entries. Our solver needed 2.6 wrong guesses on average: 31 easy, 23 medium and 13 hard. The toughest is be mine (12 misses), the quickest chocolate (0).

Words worth a closer look
- valentineNamed after Saint Valentine. Several early Christian martyrs shared that name, which is why historians cannot say for certain which one the holiday honors. The word is useful for spelling: val, en, tine.
- bouquetA French word with a silent t and a qu that sounds like k. Four of its seven letters are vowels, but the q is the letter players guess last.
- februaryPlayers say it without the first r, so they often skip it when spelling. Putting it on the board shows how often a spelling and a pronunciation drift apart.
- sonnetFrom the Italian sonetto, meaning little song. A sonnet traditionally has fourteen lines, which makes this a good link to a poetry lesson.
- sweetheartThree e's and an a make four of its nine letters vowels, so a player who opens with e fills three spaces at once.
- cupidThe Roman god of desire, shown as a winged child with a bow. It has only two vowels, u and i, so it plays as a mid-level word.
- truffleDouble f in the middle. Players tend to guess one f and then stop looking, so the last gap often stays empty longer than it should.
- cherishSh in the middle is the spelling signal, the same as in fishing and washing. Reveals are slow because only two letters are vowels.
Using this list in class
The week of February 14 is the obvious time, and card-making gives the list a second use: students choose a word they like from the sheet and use it in a verse. For a class party, have one team set the word from a small box of cards while another team guesses, which turns the round into a reading activity as much as a game.
Spelling teachers can pull out the silent and odd-letter words (bouquet, february, sonnet), the compound words (sweetheart, classmate, mailbox) and the ending patterns in devotion and affection. Younger grades can stay with the first set of short words, with adult support for letters like q.
