Earth Day Hangman Words
Earth Day hangman words on recycling, climate, wildlife and caring for the planet. Play the list online or print a free sheet with an answer key.
Read the word list
Earth Day is observed on April 22, and the vocabulary around it is some of the most useful science language a child meets in school. This list is built around the three Rs (reduce, reuse, recycle), then widens to habitats, energy sources and the words used in news stories about the environment.
The words are mostly real classroom vocabulary, so the harder ones are long rather than obscure. Biodegradable, sustainable and biodiversity are long enough to take a whole round, and environment has a spelling trap in the n before the m. Short words such as air, soil and tree let younger players join in. Phrases such as reduce reuse recycle and solar panel make good whole-class puzzles, and they double as a quick check on whether students know the key terms before a unit begins.
70 entries. Our solver needed 2.2 wrong guesses on average: 36 easy, 22 medium and 12 hard. The toughest is wind (10 misses), the quickest earth (0).

Words worth a closer look
- environmentThe n before the m is the usual slip, because the word is spoken quickly. Four of its eleven letters are vowels, so it opens fast, but the v and m come late.
- ecosystemFrom the Greek oikos, meaning house or home, plus system. The same root gives economy and ecology, which is a useful word-family link for older students.
- aluminumThe US spelling. British English writes aluminium. Worth a mention in a class that reads texts from both countries.
- biodegradableThirteen letters, built from bio (life), degrade and able. The prefix and suffix make it a good word for a word-parts lesson.
- compostDecayed plant matter used to enrich soil. The word comes from the Latin compositum, meaning put together. Two o's in seven letters make it quick for players who open with vowels.
- saplingA young tree with a slender trunk. The word is short but ends in ling, the same as in duckling and darling.
- emissionsThree s's: a pair in the middle and one at the end, so a single correct guess of s fills three spaces.
- conservationThe prefix con and the tion ending are patterns most students recognize. Five of its twelve letters are vowels, so it opens quickly.
Using this list in class
April 22 is the obvious date, but the list also fits any science unit on ecosystems or the water cycle. A class can start by sorting the words into groups: materials (plastic, glass, paper), energy (solar, wind, turbine) and living things (wildlife, sapling, earthworm). That sorting task turns a game into a short review of the unit.
Elementary teachers often use the words as a spelling list for the week, with the long ones saved for the oldest students. The list also supports a take-home activity: families play the game, then choose one phrase, such as reusable bag or compost bin, to act on at home.
