Read the word list

Spring is the season of change, and the words here follow that change: seeds and soil, shoots and buds, then blossoms, pollen and the insects that carry it. Rain gets its own section with puddle, drizzle and umbrella, and there are young animals too, from tadpole and hatchling to fledgling.

The mix of lengths is deliberate. Bud, nest and worm are quick for new readers. Chrysalis, hyacinth and asparagus are the ones that make older players slow down, because their letter patterns do not follow the usual rules. Daffodil and dandelion look alike on a blank grid, which makes for a good moment when a player has to decide between them. Phrases such as april showers and spring break suit a whole-class game.

69 entries. Our solver needed 2.9 wrong guesses on average: 21 easy, 30 medium and 18 hard. The toughest is kite (9 misses), the quickest seedling (0).

Using this list in class

Spring suits science units on life cycles and plants. After studying a butterfly, run a round with chrysalis, caterpillar and cocoon, then ask students to put the three in order and explain how they differ. A seed-planting week can use the short words, seeds, soil, sprout, as a recap for kindergarten.

In late March and April, the phrases make good transition games before spring break. Teams can take turns choosing letters for april showers or rain boots while the teacher keeps a tally on the board. Parents can print the sheet for a car trip or a rainy afternoon and use the answer key to check.
