Read the word list
The sea is the one habitat where children can name dozens of animals before they can spell any of them. This list starts with those animals: dolphin, octopus, jellyfish, seahorse, narwhal, and the crustaceans and shellfish on the seabed. It then moves to the places and processes of the ocean: coral reefs, kelp forests, tides and currents, trenches and the open sea.
A few boating words, anchor, buoy and harbor, give the list an edge for children who are interested in ships. The hard end includes words with doubled or rare letters: mackerel, anemone and barnacle carry patterns players do not expect, such as the ck in mackerel and the silent-looking final e in anemone. Plankton, nautilus and cuttlefish need several correct guesses before a shape appears. The phrases, such as hermit crab and tide pool, give a group extra clues from the word break.
72 entries. Our solver needed 2.5 wrong guesses on average: 23 easy, 41 medium and 8 hard. The toughest is wave (12 misses), the quickest seaweed (0).

Words worth a closer look
- octopusFrom Greek words for eight and foot. The plural octopuses is standard in American English, which is a good question for a spelling round.
- jellyfishNot a fish at all. The word is nine letters long with a y and an h, so it looks harder than the short, common letters suggest.
- starfishNot a fish either, and scientists prefer the name sea star. The word shares the ish ending with jellyfish and swordfish, which is a fun pattern to point out.
- narwhalThe long tusk of a male narwhal is actually a tooth. The w and h sit in the middle where players rarely look first.
- planktonFrom the Greek for drifting. The word names organisms that drift with the current, not any single species.
- abyssFrom a Greek word meaning without a bottom. Five letters with a as the only true vowel, a y, and a double s, which makes it a surprisingly hard word.
- seahorseThe male seahorse carries the eggs in a pouch until the young are born. The word is two easy words joined, so players often see the shape early.
Using this list in class
An ocean unit in science gives this list a clear place. Before a round, have students sort the animals by what they eat or where they live: reef, open water, seabed. Kindergarten and first grade can stick to dolphin, crab, clam and eel and then draw the one they solved. World Oceans Day in June is an easy hook for a one-day activity.
For older students, use the longer words as a science vocabulary check: plankton, salinity and trench in particular. After a round, ask students to write one sentence for each word they guessed. Print the sheet for a beach trip or aquarium visit and use the answer key to check the answers as a family.
