Read the phrase list

Two-word answers are the easiest step up from single words. The space in the middle tells the solver where one word stops and the next begins, and that is often enough to rule out a lot of guesses. Players soon learn to look for the clues in the gap: a three-letter word and a five-letter word could be hot dog, ice cream or sun hat.

Every entry here is something a child or adult would say in a normal day: school bus, swimming pool, pizza box, high school. They suit classroom use because students already know the vocabulary and can focus on spelling and strategy. Because most pairs include one short word and one longer one, rounds fill in at a steady pace, with the short word often last to fall.

52 entries. Our solver needed 4.1 wrong guesses on average: 3 easy, 6 medium and 6 hard. The toughest is lunch box (12 misses), the quickest apple pie (0).

How to use this list

Start a round by writing the blanks with a clear space between the words. After the first correct letter, ask the group which word is easier to guess, and why. That discussion is a quick lesson in using patterns.

For a reading lesson, pair each solved answer with a quick drawing: students sketch the compound, for example a picture of a fire and a truck, and discuss whether it means the same as the two words alone. Younger players can handle the shortest pairs such as hot dog and sun hat.
