Read the phrase list
Full sentences stretch hangman from a spelling game into a reading game. Players are not just finding letters, they are using grammar: a small word at the start is probably the or a, a word ending in ing sits after a form of the verb be, and a capital-less word before a noun is likely to be an adjective. That reasoning is exactly what teachers want to see from early readers.
Each sentence here runs five to nine words and uses vocabulary from everyday life: school, food, weather, family, the park. There is no punctuation and no capital letters, so the game stays about letters and word shapes. Because the words are common ones, a round is rarely stuck for long, but the length means a full sentence takes more guesses than a single word, so plan on five to ten minutes per round with a group.

Words worth a closer look
- the cat sat on the matA classic early reader sentence. The word the appears twice and the a and t sounds repeat, so it solves quickly.
- i like to read books at nightStarts with a single-letter word, which is an immediate clue for players who know there are only two options, a and i.
- my dog loves to chase the ballShort common words plus a double l in ball. A friendly mid-length example.
- she walks to school every morningContains three words ending in s, g or l, which helps players reason about word endings.
- we are going to the park todayShort function words mix with the longer going and today. Good for noticing ing endings.
How to use this list
Write the blanks with a clear gap between words and let the class suggest letters. Once a few small words are in place, stop and ask which kind of word could fit in the remaining gaps. That pause is where the learning happens.
For English learners, ask each student to read the completed sentence aloud and then change one word to make a new sentence. For early readers, start with the five-word entries. For older students, ask them to write their own sentence of a given length to be used in the next round.
