Read the word list

Vehicles are among the first nouns children learn, so a transportation list lets very young players succeed while older ones still have material to work on. Car, bus, boat and van are solved almost at once. Helicopter, submarine, locomotive, hovercraft and tricycle stretch spelling skills and come with word parts that can be taken apart.

The list moves across land, water and air, and includes the places and people around travel: airport, station, runway, harbor, conductor and pilot. That variety means the same sheet can support a unit on how people get around, a map skills lesson or a simple vocabulary session with a child who is devoted to trains. Phrases like school bus, fire truck and hot air balloon add familiar two-word answers.

69 entries. Our solver needed 3.3 wrong guesses on average: 18 easy, 34 medium and 17 hard. The toughest is jet (14 misses), the quickest airplane (0).

Using this list in class

Transportation fits early elementary units on community, maps and how people travel. Sort the answers after each round into land, air and water, and invite children to draw one vehicle from each group. The compound words, such as sailboat, railroad and tugboat, are a natural lead-in to a spelling lesson on joining two words.

On a family trip, the game turns waiting time into practice: players choose a vehicle they have just seen out of the window. Teachers of English learners can use the printable sheet alongside pictures, since most of the nouns have an obvious image.
