Read the spelling list
The pattern: Three-letter consonant-vowel-consonant words where e makes its short sound, checked by pronunciation.
Short e is the vowel in bed, and it is the one kindergarten children mix up most. Many young writers hear it as a short i, so pen turns into pin and set into sit. This list gives you three-letter consonant, vowel, consonant words with the short e sound: red, bed, leg, pen, net, wet, jet, vet, hen, ten, web and more.
Each word was selected by spelling pattern and confirmed against a pronunciation dictionary, and the vocabulary was limited to words common enough for five-year-olds to recognize. Because e and i sound close together in many accents, the list pays off best when children say the word aloud and feel their mouth: the jaw drops a little more for e than for i. Most kindergarten spelling is done orally or with letter tiles, and this list works well for both.
27 entries. Our solver needed 7.6 wrong guesses on average: 0 easy, 3 medium and 24 hard. The toughest is jet (14 misses), the quickest ten (3).

Words worth a closer look
- menThe plural of man, which sits on the short a list. Showing the two together is a quick lesson that the vowel can change when a word changes meaning.
- gemThe g sounds like /j/ here because it comes before e. Most short e words on this list start with a hard consonant, so gem is a gentle first look at a soft g.
- webThe w sound is often missed. Say it slowly and have children round their lips for the first sound before writing.
- bedAnother word with both b and d. Many classrooms use the bed trick: a hand pattern showing b at one end and d at the other.
- petA word children care about, so it holds attention. Good for a sentence of their own after spelling it.
Teaching it
Teach short e right after short a and before short i, and pair it with a minimal-pair routine. Say pen and pin, then ask which one has the open mouth. Let children sort picture cards into two piles. Another reliable move is word chains with tiles: ten, hen, pen, pet, pit. Swapping a single tile makes the vowel contrast visible.
The usual error is writing i for e, followed by dropping the vowel altogether. Some children also leave the vowel out entirely and write pn for pen. In a hangman round, reveal the e at the start and let the class guess the first and last letters. The printable gives each child a short written check once the oral work is solid.
