The pattern: Three-letter consonant-vowel-consonant words where u makes its short sound, checked by pronunciation.
Short u is the sound at the start of up and in the middle of sun, and it is usually the last of the five short vowels that kindergarten classes introduce. Every word here follows the consonant, vowel, consonant pattern with a short u: sun, run, fun, bug, hug, mug, rug, cup, mud, nut, tub, bus and more.
The words were chosen by spelling pattern and then checked against a pronunciation dictionary, so each really has the short u sound. A frequency filter kept the list to words children meet early. Short u has a sound that is easy to mix up with short o when children say it in isolation, but words are different: bug and bog sound clearly apart when spoken in context. This list is a good place to practice oral blending, where the teacher says the sounds one at a time and children say the word.

Words worth a closer look
- busThe s at the end makes the /s/ sound here, unlike in his. Tiles help children see that the word is three letters and three sounds.
- sunA good anchor for the -un family: run, fun, bun, sun.
- mudA word with high child appeal, and a useful contrast with mad on the short a list.
- cupFinal p and b can sound close to young listeners, so contrast cup with cub to train careful listening at the end of a word.
- hugPart of the -ug family, with bug, mug, rug and tug, which makes it good for rhyme and chain work.
Teaching it
Have children say the word, count the sounds on their fingers, and then build it with tiles. Next, change the vowel while keeping the consonants: bug, bag, big, bog. Four words from one frame show how much the middle sound matters. Rhyming sets also fit this list well, such as bug, hug, mug, rug, tug.
Typical mistakes are writing o for u (bog for bug), and leaving off the final consonant, as in bu for bus. During a hangman round, the teacher can show the u and let the group guess the rest. Everyone should say the word aloud when it is solved. Afterward, hand out the printable for a quick written check of five or six words.
