Read the spelling list

The pattern: Three-letter consonant-vowel-consonant words where i makes its short sound, checked by pronunciation.

Short i is the sound in pig, and it closes out the first three vowels most kindergarten classes teach. Every word on this list has three letters in the consonant, vowel, consonant pattern, with the vowel saying its short sound: big, pig, dig, fig, sit, hit, bit, kid, win, pin, tip and many more.

The list was built from pattern, then each word was checked against a pronunciation dictionary so none of them hides a different vowel sound. A frequency filter kept it to words five-year-olds hear often. There are plenty of rhyming sets inside it (big, dig, fig, pig and bit, hit, kit, sit), which makes it a good bridge into word families. In kindergarten the real skill being built is encoding: listening to the word, separating its sounds, and choosing a letter for each. Spelling accuracy comes second, and the oral and tile work counts as spelling here.

30 entries. Our solver needed 9.1 wrong guesses on average: 0 easy, 2 medium and 28 hard. The toughest is fix (14 misses), the quickest tin (3).

Teaching it

Tell children that short i is a small, quick sound, made with a smile. Practice with tiles by building sit, then swapping the first tile to make hit, bit and kit. Next change the last tile: sit, sip, sin. This shows that each sound position can be changed on its own, which is the idea behind both reading and spelling.

Typical errors are writing e for i (pen for pin) and dropping the vowel altogether. Reversals are common too. Hangman works well on this list if the teacher supplies the vowel: show _ i _ and let the group offer consonants, then say each guess aloud with its sound. Keep rounds short, since three-letter words are hard for the solver on this site and can feel frustrating when the vowel is hidden.
