The pattern: Three-letter consonant-vowel-consonant words where o makes its short sound, checked by pronunciation.
Short o is the sound in hot and fox. In most American accents it sounds a lot like ah, with the mouth open wide, which surprises adults who expect a rounder sound. The list holds three-letter words with a consonant, short o and a consonant: top, hot, pot, mop, hop, pop, box, fox, job, mom, fog, hog and more.
Each word was chosen by pattern and confirmed with a pronunciation dictionary, so the vowel really is the short o of an American speaker. A frequency check kept the vocabulary to words young children use. At this stage the goal is encoding, hearing each sound in order and writing a letter for it, and short o is easier to hear than short e or short i. Many teachers use these words for oral blending and for letter-tile building before any handwriting practice starts.

Words worth a closer look
- momAmerican spelling. Some children will know mum from other books, so say which one your class uses.
- boxThe x stands for /k/ and /s/ together, so it has three letters but four sounds.
- jobThe j sound comes before o, and the word ends with the b that children often confuse with d.
- foxA picture word children love, and a nice second example of the x ending after box.
- topA good anchor for the -op family: top, hop, pop, mop, cop.
Teaching it
Show the open mouth: children can hold a hand under the chin and feel the jaw drop on o. Then do a quick sort with pictures, pot, pit, pat, to separate the three vowels. Tile chains also work: hot, pot, pop, top, mop. Change a single tile at a time and have the child read each word aloud before moving to the next.
Watch for children who write a for o, because the sounds are close in some accents, and for those who leave out the vowel. For the hangman round, give away the o and let the class guess the surrounding letters, saying each word fully when it is found. The printable sheet offers a short written follow-up, and the answer key helps with fast marking.
