The pattern: Anti means against: antifreeze works against freezing. Every word is anti plus a real base word.

Anti is a Greek prefix meaning against or opposed to. Antifreeze works against freezing, an antidote works against a poison, and an antibody is a protein that works against a foreign invader. In English, anti is attached to a complete base word, which means the spelling of the base is never changed.

The ten words on the list are antibiotic, antibody, antitrust, antidote, antisocial, antithesis, antivirus, antiviral, antiseptic and antifreeze. They are science and technology words, and sixth graders see them in health and life science units. Unlike many prefixes in this series, anti is Greek, which is a nice moment to point out that English draws on more than one ancient language.

10 entries. Our solver needed 0.7 wrong guesses on average: 9 easy, 1 medium and 0 hard. The toughest is antitrust (2 misses), the quickest antidote (0).

Teaching it

Have students underline anti in each word and write the base: biotic, body, trust, dote, social. Then ask what the word means if you read it as against plus the base. The common spelling error is writing ante for anti, as in antebiotic. Ante means before and anti means against, so the two prefixes are worth teaching side by side.

In hangman, the opening a, n, t, i is easy, so ask players to spend their early guesses on the second half. Print the worksheet and have students write one example sentence for each word that includes the base word.
