Read the spelling list
The pattern: Inter means between or among. Every word starts with the prefix and is pronounced with it.
Inter is a Latin prefix meaning between or among. An interview is a view between people, an intersection is where roads cut across each other, and international describes what lies between nations. Because the prefix attaches to a base without changing it, the spelling of the base survives: inter plus act is interact, inter plus change is interchange.
The list includes international, interview, interaction, intervention, interpretation, interface, interactive, intermediate, interference, interstate and intersection. Many of these are multi-syllable academic words that middle school students meet in social studies and science. Sixth grade is the point where spelling instruction leans on word parts: instead of memorizing letter by letter, students learn that a long word is a prefix, a base and an ending, and that each of the three can be spelled on its own.

Words worth a closer look
- internationalInter plus national: between nations. The longest word most students will write all year without hesitation.
- interviewInter plus view. Often spelled with enter at the front by mistake.
- intersectionInter plus section: where two roads cut across each other.
- interfereInter plus fere: to come between. The e at the end is easy to forget, and so is the single r in the middle.
- intermediateInter plus mediate: between two levels. Contains the word media inside it.
Teaching it
Have students break each word into three parts and write the meaning of the prefix beside it. Interaction becomes inter, act, ion. The spelling errors are almost always at the joins: writing enter for inter (entervene, enterview), doubling a letter that should not double, or dropping an e where the base keeps one, as in interfere.
In hangman, the opening five letters are the same for every word, so give them away and play the rest. A longer word like interchangeable is easy to solve after a few hits. Print the worksheet and ask students to write what each word means in their own words, using between or among at least once.
