Read the spelling list
The pattern: Trans means across. Every word starts with the prefix and is pronounced with it.
The prefix trans means across, through or beyond. To transfer is to carry across, to translate is to carry meaning across languages, and transparent describes something you can see through. In the Latin tradition the prefix often sits before roots like fer (carry), port (carry) and form (shape), so a transformation is a change of shape.
The list includes transfer, transition, translation, transaction, transformation, transparent, translate, transplant, transcript, transmit and transatlantic. Middle school is when students need this prefix: science texts talk about transmission and transformation, history texts about transatlantic trade. Learning one prefix opens up dozens of words, and sixth grade is the year when students start writing paragraphs full of them.

Words worth a closer look
- transferTrans plus fer, carry across. The doubled r in transferred appears only when an ending is added.
- translateTo carry meaning across from one language to another. The e on the end stays in translated and translator.
- transparentTrans plus parent: showing through. Students sometimes write transparant.
- transplantTrans plus plant: to move a plant, or an organ, from one place to another.
- transatlanticTrans plus Atlantic, written in lower case: across the Atlantic. The tl in the middle is easy to scramble.
Teaching it
Have students underline trans and then pronounce the base on its own: fer, late, plant, parent. Most spelling slips come from the join, because trans is followed by an s in some words (transition, transcript) and a consonant in others, and students sometimes write tran or trance. Where the base starts with s, as in transcript, the prefix keeps its own s and the base keeps its: no letter is added or lost.
Hangman works well because the opening is predictable. Give players the first five letters and ask what the second half might be. After solving, ask students to say what has moved across in each word. Print the worksheet and use it for a prefix sort with the earlier inter list.
