The pattern: Sub means under or below. Every word starts with the prefix and is pronounced with it.

Sub is a Latin prefix meaning under, below or secondary. A submarine runs under the sea, a subtitle sits under the main title, and a subsection is a smaller part of a section. When the base begins with a particular letter, sub sometimes changes form: suffer, support and suppose are all sub in disguise, but in this list the prefix stays whole.

Words on the list include subject, substantial, submit, substitute, subscription, subscribe, suburban, submarine, subdivision, subtitle and subsection. Many of them are everyday school words, from the subject of a sentence to a school subscription. In sixth grade students are asked to write about subjects and subtopics, so sub is a prefix they use constantly without noticing.

30 entries. Our solver needed 0.9 wrong guesses on average: 23 easy, 7 medium and 0 hard. The toughest is submit (4 misses), the quickest substantial (0).

Teaching it

Break each word into sub and the rest, and ask what is under, below or secondary about it. Submarine is under the marine, subtitle is under the title. Not every word has a clear base (subject, substantial), so some of these are learned as a whole. The common slip is dropping the b (susmit) or running the prefix into its base, as in subtitel.

For hangman, the sub opening is free information, so start there and guess the remaining letters. Because many words end in common endings (tion, ial, ive), players will do well after a few vowels. Print the worksheet and have students write a sentence using the under idea for each of five words.
