The pattern: Super means above or beyond. Every word starts with the prefix and is pronounced with it.

Super is a Latin prefix meaning above, over or beyond. A supervisor oversees work, a supernatural event lies beyond nature, and something superhuman goes past ordinary human limits. The pronunciation always starts with the soo sound, which makes the spelling of the front of the word easy to hear. What the ear does not tell you is what follows: super is nearly always attached to a whole word or a familiar root, so the question is mainly where the join falls and what the ending is.

The list has twenty words, including superintendent, supervisor, supervision, supernatural, supermarket, superficial, superpower, supersonic, superstition and supernova. Some are common nouns, some are adjectives, and a few are long enough to be good spelling challenges. Sixth graders meet them in science (supernova, supersonic), civics (superintendent) and everyday reading.

19 entries. Our solver needed 0.6 wrong guesses on average: 19 easy, 0 medium and 0 hard. The toughest is supervisor (1 misses), the quickest superintendent (0).

Teaching it

Ask students to separate super and the base. Many bases are words on their own: market, power, human, natural. Others, like intendent, are word parts, and for those it is better to chunk by syllable: su-per-in-ten-dent. The usual spelling error is the ending of superintendent, which has ent twice and no a, so students write superintendant.

In hangman, give the word's length and the first five letters (super) and ask players to guess the rest. Long words like superstructure get solved in a few turns. Print the worksheet, and ask students to put each word on a line from less than normal to more than normal and explain where the prefix sits.
